the inner landscape of an AI technologist optimizing for a life of joy, wellness, human connection and purpose

I made this space to serialise some thoughts and musings - one of my many scratch papers

My work is here

During the pandemic I found myself stranded on an island for a few years - an experience that shaped me profoundly and reminded me to live a little and create joy along the way :)

Curiosity and wanderlust

There is no cure for curiosity." - Dorothy Parker

Thank goodness for that. How else would we start on the path of self-discovery : finding what brings us joy, purpose, deeper connection with one another.

I’ve always felt I’ve been searching for something my whole life. Over the years I’ve reasoned : perhaps it’s a search for my people, my work, my service to humanity, my reason for being. Perhaps its all that, yes, but I find its ultimately discovering what you were already designed to do here - how to bring it out and let it play.

In college, my curiosity took me from theoretical mathematics to cryptography and privacy, after taking a course with the author of Ziggurat algorithm (used extensively in Monte Carlo simulations and other statistical modeling tasks where high-quality random sampling from non-uniform distributions is essential). Summer of my sophomore, I worked on SDNs for a project with Google looking to discover IP routing topologies. A year later, took on an investigation in compiler optimizations to help speed up a protein re-sequencing project for the Biology department. In senior year, rekindled my love for art with graphics and computer vision. This path ultimately led me to a PhD program in CV, fatefully assigned to a professor in Machine Learning, where I discovered and fell in love with the quest for intelligence.

Later at Apple, I worked on various tech stacks and domains, blending social impact with cutting-edge AI technology. A perfect place to learn how great tech is built and perfected with the world's smartest people. In my 5 years, I built ML infrastructure and APIs, worked on spatial understanding and body estimation, and later prompted for a project in breath and heart metrics, inspired by my passion for understanding the impact of daily practices on our bodies.

As a wanderer in this landscape, I stay curious about important problems and enjoy collaborating with people with shared passions for solving them. Recently, I took a brief break to pursue a passion project, travel and discover my next adventure ^_^

As an empathetic technologist, I continue to think about how I can help create a world where we can take better care for our bodies, our minds, and feel more connected to each other through experiences built with AI. If you are working on such a project, I’d love to hear.

For fun

Some things I carve time for : nature, chasing sunsets, reading, journaling, taking care of my mind and body, getting tossed in waves and sometimes — on lazy Sundays — playing DotA.

My love for design, conscious consumerism, and working with local artisans led me to create my own sustainable brand www.kamli.studio

All the pieces are produced ethically, in small batches in Lahore and designed by me :)

Current musings

I'm continually exploring what impact AI can have in :

  • Creating and supporting meaningful connection

  • Fashion and sustainability

  • Wellness

I’m currently nursing an entrepreneurial bug. If you’re working on fun things, feel free to drop a line :)
